How To Exfoliate Your Lips The Right Way
If it’s not winter and you’re reading this, then we’d like to welcome you to our dry lippie gang. Because by now you might have realized that just using your lip balm is not cutting through. Believe it or not, exfoliation is directly proportional to having a plump and soft pucker. But hold on, this does not mean that you go all ninja with your toothbrush and start scrubbing your lips vigorously. There is a process, and exfoliating your lips the right way will give you long-lasting results.
Why should you exfoliate lips?
Have you noticed – why is it always the lips that keep running dry? It’s because unlike our face, the skin on our lips does not have oil-producing glands that are responsible to keep skin soft and supple. So, with them being totally MIA, lips get dehydrated quickly and need something extra to maintain their suppleness. That is where exfoliation plays a role. It buffs away that top layer of flaky and dry skin to reveal smoother skin beneath. But when not done right, it can actually do more harm than good.
How to properly exfoliate your lips?
Step 1: Clean lips
Before you exfoliate, make sure that your lips are void of any makeup, be it lipstick, gloss, balm or lip oil. If wearing any, use micellar water and swipe away the product. Once done, pat them dry and continue to the next step.
Step 2: Gently exfoliate
Coat your lips using either a DIY scrub (more on this below) or a ready-to-use product. Then with very light pressure, massage your lips in a circular motion. Do this for a good 2-3 minutes. Make sure you’re not being aggressive, as it will damage and irritate your skin. After a good massage, wipe off the residue and wash your lips with cold water.
Step 3: Re-hydrate quickly
Your lips would look much more pink and soft already. But do not stop there. Since there is newer skin on the surface now, protect it with a hydrating lip balm. It is preferable to use a lip balm that contains SPF. It will not only infuse moisture back into your lips but also protect it from harmful UV rays.
Step 4: Lip mask
Wondering how to lighten your lips? Using a replenishing lip mask in your PM skincare routine will ensure that your lips stay soft and supple throughout the next day. These are intensive lip treatments that lock-in moisture, melt away dead skin cells, and even form a protective layer on the lips. Consider this a shortcut to get healthy, soft lips! Our Mon Cherry Lip Nourishing Sleeping Mask soothes and repairs dry, chapped lips overnight. It contains glycerin and squalane that deep condition skin and keep it hydrated for hours. It has a very lightweight and gel-like texture that will ‘dissolve’ in your lips to give you plump-looking lips the next morning!
Try These DIY Lip Scrubs With Homemade Ingredients
Are you a big DIYer? Get excited, because lip scrubs are the easiest to whip up. Below are a few combinations to try.
Glycerin + Sea Salt
This one is actually Priyanka Chopra Jones’ favourite. Add in a tablespoon of sea salt (it can be any grainy salt) in a bowl and to it, add a little vegetable glycerin. The consistency should be runny, but not very. Then a few drops of rose water and your scrub is ready. Salt can draw water to the skin’s surface, making lips plump and glycerin is the best humectant you can find. After a good massage with this paste, you can say hello to plump lips!
Vaseline + Fine Sugar
The good ol’ Vaseline is the solution to a lot of skin issues, lip included. Take a sufficient amount of the petroleum jelly and add fine sugar/castor sugar/brown sugar to it. Apply the thick paste to your lips and massage for a couple minutes. Then wipe your lips with a clean cloth to reveal pink, baby soft lips.
Sugar + Honey
With ingredients so delish, try not to lick them off your lips! But mixing sugar and honey in equal parts and giving your lips a good massage will leave your lips feeling buttery soft. Just be a bit careful, as the sugar will melt and might drip down your face.
So you see, there is no big secret behind juicy lips. Just exfoliate the right way and there you have it!
